Inside MGM Cotai

MGM Cotai joined the Cotai Strip in 2018, and its outline is hard to mistake: a heap of glass blocks set at slight angles, drawn from the idea of jewellery cases piled on a counter. Inside, the resort trusts design rather than copied monuments, which separates it from several heavily themed neighbours. Rooms are calm and modern, lit softly, with generous bathrooms, and the mood stays measured even when the halls below are full.

Its centrepiece is The Spectacle, a towering atrium lined with digital screens that shift between artworks and seasonal scenes, and it rewards a slow coffee more than a passing glance. Pieces from the owner's collection turn up in lobbies and along corridors, so the walk to dinner becomes a small gallery visit. Old Taipa village and the quiet Coloane shoreline are a short taxi hop away. The gaming hall sits apart and had no say in this placing.

Best for

Design-minded travellers who would rather browse an art trail than ride a gondola under a painted sky.

Inside Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa

Station Casinos placed Red Rock in Summerlin, a planned district on the western rim of the Las Vegas Valley, and that choice colours the whole stay. Rooms on the mountain side look towards sandstone ridges and the Spring Mountains instead of neon, while the interiors lean on warm stone, pale timber and broad panes of glass. It reads more like a desert spa hotel than a Strip tower, yet the city's lights remain an easy drive east.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, with its scenic loop road and trails between red and cream cliffs, begins a short drive west, so a sunrise walk fits comfortably before breakfast. Back at the resort, the pool grounds are laid out generously with cabanas, and the spa carries a long treatment menu. Downtown Summerlin's shops and restaurants sit right alongside. The casino fills the ground level and had no influence on where the hotel landed.

Best for

Visitors who want Las Vegas within reach but would rather open the curtains onto cliffs.

Inside Mindil Beach Casino Resort

Mindil Beach is where Darwin gathers to watch the sun go down, and this resort sits just behind it, its low wings spread over lawns and tropical planting. The scale feels relaxed beside high-rise casino towers, and many rooms face either the gardens or the water. The Superior Lagoon Rooms are the ones to ask about, since their decks step directly into a lagoon pool with a swim-up bar. The city centre is only minutes away by car.

Through the dry season the Mindil Beach Sunset Market sets up beside the sand on Thursday and Sunday evenings, with food stalls, crafts and street performers as the light fades over the sea. The George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens lie a short walk inland. Read the local safety signs before swimming in the sea, because stingers are present for a large part of the year. The casino forms one wing of the property and was left out of our judgement.

Inside Peppermill Resort Spa Casino

The Peppermill stands along South Virginia Street below downtown Reno and is known for an Italian look that runs from its tower suites to the painted ceilings of the public spaces. Tower rooms are roomy and dressed in a Tuscan manner, with marble and deep fabrics, and the higher floors look across the valley to the Sierra Nevada. One unusual detail stands out: the resort taps geothermal energy beneath its own grounds to warm its pools and spas.

Spa Toscana is the property's quiet core, with a caldarium, an indoor pool and treatment rooms that suit an unhurried morning. Outside, the pool deck livens up in the warmer months. Reno has smartened its riverfront along the Truckee, and Lake Tahoe lies up in the mountains roughly an hour away, which makes the hotel a sensible base for a lake day. The gaming floor is big but stands entirely apart from the reasons it is listed here.

Inside NUSTAR Resort

NUSTAR ranks among the newest large resorts in the Visayas, rising on the reclaimed South Road Properties along Cebu City's shoreline. The complex gathers more than one hotel, including Fili, a brand created to celebrate Filipino hospitality through local materials, handicraft and regional cooking. Rooms are bright and current in style, and the waterfront setting gives many of them an open outlook across the water rather than over the city's rooftops.

An attached mall and a long list of restaurants help when Cebu's heat or a sudden tropical downpour sets in. Old Cebu, with Magellan's Cross, the Basilica del Santo Niño and Fort San Pedro, is a short drive north, while Mactan's beaches and island-hopping outings are easy to arrange. Rush-hour traffic can crawl, so set off early for sightseeing. The casino is one tenant inside a much larger development and did not shape this order.

Sonesta Maho Beach occupies a stretch of Maho Bay on the Dutch side of St. Maarten, a few minutes from Princess Juliana International Airport. It runs as an all-inclusive, so meals, drinks and most activities are bundled into the price, which makes budgeting a family holiday much simpler. Room types range from standard categories up to an adults-only club on the highest floors, and the beachfront position keeps the sea close to every lift.

The real draw lies next door: Maho Beach, where incoming aircraft pass astonishingly low over the sand just before touchdown, a spectacle people plan whole afternoons around. Further afield, the French side of the island offers calmer bays and the seafront restaurants of Grand Case. On site you will find Serenity Spa, several restaurants and an evening entertainment programme. Casino Royale is independently operated and stayed outside our assessment.

Inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Ottawa

Hard Rock's Ottawa address is on Albion Road on the southern side of the capital, a practical spot for anyone arriving by car or flying into the nearby airport. The hotel carries the brand's music theme through its corridors and lounges, with memorabilia and a soundtrack-driven look, while the rooms themselves are contemporary, comfortable and noticeably calmer than the public areas downstairs. Several suite categories are offered for longer or celebratory stays.

Ottawa's headline sights lie a drive north: Parliament Hill above the Ottawa River, the ByWard Market's food stalls and patios, the National Gallery of Canada and the locks of the Rideau Canal, which is listed by UNESCO. In February the Winterlude festival fills the core with ice sculptures. Back at the hotel, restaurants and live performances take care of the evenings. The gaming floor counted for nothing in deciding its place.

Inside Suncoast Towers

Suncoast Towers is the smarter hotel inside Tsogo Sun's Suncoast complex on Durban's beachfront, and its position is the strongest argument for booking. The Golden Mile promenade runs straight past, and rooms on the ocean side gaze over the Indian Ocean and the long arc of sand below. The wider complex wears an art deco flavour, with restaurants and bars a few steps away, so evenings demand very little planning.

Durban's sea stays mild for much of the year, and the promenade is a favourite for early walks and for watching anglers along the piers at first light. uShaka Marine World, with its aquarium, lies towards the southern end of the beachfront, and the spice stalls of the Victoria Street Market offer a taste of the city's Indian heritage. Follow local advice about which beaches have lifeguards on duty. The neighbouring casino was set aside entirely when ranking.

Inside Cairo Marriott Hotel & Omar Khayyam Casino

The Cairo Marriott grew up around the Gezira Palace, which Khedive Ismail commissioned to receive European royalty, most famously Empress Eugénie, for the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. The ornate palace now holds lounges and restaurants, while modern towers on either side contain most of the rooms, many of them facing the Nile. Staying here means waking in Zamalek, one of the gentler neighbourhoods in a famously hectic city.

The palace garden is the place to linger once evening arrives, a green courtyard of cafés and tables beneath the trees that feels far removed from the traffic beyond the gates. Zamalek's streets hold galleries, bookshops and riverside walks, and the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square is a short taxi ride across the river. The pyramids of Giza need more time, depending on traffic. The Omar Khayyam Casino played no part in how we placed this hotel.

Inside Resorts World Birmingham

Resorts World Birmingham opened in 2015 on the edge of the NEC site, beside a lake and close to both Birmingham Airport and Birmingham International station. Its rooms belong to the Genting Hotel, set inside a large glass-fronted building that also houses an outlet mall, restaurants and an IMAX cinema, so a wet evening never calls for an umbrella. Rooms are modern and practical, and the higher ones look out across the water.

Santai Spa offers treatments and a quieter corner of the complex, and Sky Bar near the top gives a view over the lake towards the exhibition halls. Trains from Birmingham International reach the city centre quickly, where the canals, the Jewellery Quarter and the Library of Birmingham deserve an afternoon. It suits anyone attending an NEC exhibition especially well. The casino was not weighed at any point in this ranking.

NEC visitors and rail travellers who like having everything under a single roof.
